You can’t take a trip to the International Biscuit Festival without coming home with some great swag! This year a few of the event partners who donated items were the Food Network, Southern Living and my favorite White Lily. BTW, it was pretty much unanimous from attendees, competitors and southern cooks, that White Lily flour makes the best biscuits!

Well, this is easy. Living in North and South Carolinas all my life, nearly everything we eat has a southern twist. But currently my favorite is shrimp and grits (and preferably creole).

OMGoodness, this definitely is one hard question, especially when you
grew up surrounded by homemade, southern food. But, I have to say
BISCUITS ruled in our country kitchen. Saturday mornings were quaranteed
to be greeted with BISCUITS smothered in chocolate gravy & bacon on the side, truly
a southern, comfort to the eye!

And YES, White Lily is the ONLY when serving BISCUITS!

    Blessings from Kentucky,
    -Pamela

Well. Having lived in land-locked Colorado all my life, I am not overly familiar with southern food. If Cracker Barrel restaurants make southern biscuits and gravy, then SIGN ME UP!!!! Have mercy, those things are nothing less than amazing!! Thanks for the fun giveaway! Would give my right arm to be from the south – seems like such a great area of our country!!

  16. karen

Cornbread. Shrimp & grits. Fried okra. Biscuits, biscuits, biscuits! Fried catfish. I love it all!!

  19. Lori Hall

In my opinion, there are just too many good things that we Southern women can make to choose just one. Fried okra with creamed corn…mac and cheese…..fried green tomatoes…country style steak and gravy…and of course….a good, fluffy biscuit!!!

  20. katey deasy

Momma always used White Lily, so I do too. I love a bacon and tomato sandwich. This is not just any BT sandwich! This is a tomato I picked from the garden still warm (you have to be barefoot too) white bread (I know heaven forbid) with a little mayo and fresh cracked pepper and salt and crisp fried bacon. Hmm. There is just nothing like it. If the corn is in, it’s even better as a side. I don’t eat them any other way!! Hurry up tomatoes!!

  21. Deb

Biscuits for sure! Thank you for this wonderful giveaway Heather.

  22. Rachel from Texas!

Oh, my favorite Southern food has to be Shrimp and grits- preferably from a creole/cajun “chef”. If you pair those with the turtle soup and Sunday brunch at Brennan’s in NOLA, you’ll never want to leave. Thanks for the giveaway AND the frequency of blog posts. Your blog is like a mini vacation!

  23. jes

It’s a toss-up between cornbread and green beans cooked in bacon grease. Mmmmm.

  24. Dawn Gahan

I’ve been a true Southerner (a transplant from Maryland) since 1999, and it wasn’t until about 2 years ago that I fell in love with Pimento Cheese Spread at a baby shower. Tucked into the trough of a slice of celery (the way we Southerners trump the bad with the good), the velvety cheese with the crunch of veggies is heaven. Just sayin’.

  25. Pam B

Biscuits with a slice of a fresh home grown tomato!

  26. the gypsy magpie

My favorite southern food is probably fried okra… although I try to stay away from fried foods, there is no way I can resist a huge batch of fried okra here in the south… it’s the best!

  55. Andrea Hamilton

Mashed potatoes and gravy – YUM! Although I have to say the cornbread in the south is too die for too!

  57. shelly

Love many of the southern dishes but favorite is biscuits with homemade sugar syrup. My Grandma always made us this for breakfast. We would put the syrup in a bowl with a little butter and dip her homemade buttermilk biscuits in it. She would always make us eat a egg before we could have the sweet. She made the syrup by cooking sugar in a saucepan till it started to turn brown and bubble around the edges then add water and let it cook down. This is by far my absolute favorite meal she made. I sure miss her~

  58. shelly

I mistyped my email on the previous comment about my grandma’s buttermilk biscuits and sugar syrup. This is the correct one~ sorry.

  100. Jane Perry

Oh, Heather, there is no doubt about my favorite Southern food. It’s fried chicken cooked my grandmother’s way. It was a staple at our house when I was growing up. Alas, the food police put an end to the twice weekly indulgence. The pan gravy that went with it was wonderful. That, too, is sadly too much of a good thing. Now, we save this family treasure for the patriotic celebrations and every family member loves it! Thanks for offering the give away and especially for sharing your visit to this glorious place.

Oh my!! What a fabulous giveaway!! I have to say my favorite Southern food is homemade Peach Cobbler with a biscuit topping! The kind that cute little rosy-cheeked grand-ma’s bring to the church supper or All Day Dinner on the Ground and hymn singin’! Praise the Lord for Southern cookin’! Amen.

  179. Donna

It’s gotta be biscuits for me too…. But the fried okra would be next!

Hmm, let me think. My list of southern favorites is pretty long. I’ll have to go with a simple classic dessert. Let’s go with a slice of Sweet Cherry Pie. The kind with a super flaky crust along with a dollup of whipped cream (served on a very pretty plate, of course).

    OK, make that two slices.

  181. Kim

My dad grew up very poor on a small farm in Missouri. He is a great southern cook. Now 81 years old, he has made our family his famous “biscuits and gravy” countless times. As a very young girl, I have fond memories of the small cafe my family owned for a short time. Dad started making his biscuits and gravy in the wee hours of the morning, and the old cowboys would come in early to get a plate full before they were all gone. They always sold out fast.

Dad stills fires up his cast iron skillet every Christmas morning to make us this favorite, soul-satisfying breakfast.

Warm biscuits and jam-yum!!! Thanks for the fun give-away!

  189. Nicki

A nearly impossible question to answer! I could say fried chicken, biscuits, fried potatoes or pecan pie, but I think my absolute favorite of all is Fried Green Tomatoes! There is nothing like the tart taste of a fresh homegrown green tomatoe lightly battered in egg and flour, fried to golden brown with a dash of salt and pepper! Simplicity and homemade comfort food. If anyone hasn’t tried them yet, you must taste them at least once before you die! ๐Ÿ˜‰

The giveaway is lovely, thank you for the chance to win! Mmm, I wish my tomato plants had fruit on them right now. I’d make a plate and share!

I’m from the Northwest, so my experience with southern food has been kind of limited. Buuuut, I love good biscuits. And peaches.

  191. Glenda A

Now this is a hard one!! I had a biscuit with fresh strawberry jam for breakfast, so as of this moment that is my favorite.

  192. Jonna Musselwhite

It has to be Chicken and Dumplings!!!

  193. Hayley

It’s not a food, but southern sweet tea is my comfort! Always has been, always will be! Happy Memorial Day!

  194. Jill Jones

Its hard to tell you my one favorite food. First, I thought- Fried Chicken, then what about Fried Okra- no- Fried Green Tomatoes, or Fresh Green Beans cooked to death with bacon, or Black-eyed Peas with Cornbread, but then wash all that down with a mason jar of Sweet Tea, not to mention the desserts- Peach or Blackberry Cobbler, or maybe Pecan Pie- I can’t decide, anyone of them would make me happy, sounds like a gooood supper!

Speaking of biscuits, my grandmother, whom I fondly refer to as “Nanny,” makes the best biscuits I’ve ever put in my mouth. Topped with some homemade peach jam, they nearly melt in my mouth. So my Nanny’s biscuits top my list of southern favorites.
