Small Laundry Room Style

Laun13_edited-2
Well, we finally finished our small laundry room project. We actually refer to it as the laundry closet because as you can see it's only as wide as a washer & dryer! We considered knocking out the back wall to extend the room but eventually decided against it…small can be beautiful and functional. Come take a peek!

One of the design elements I struggled with was whether or not to add shelving for all our cleaning supplies. In the end, I felt it would make the room seem very cluttered so we opted for pedestals for our washer & dryer. I'm really glad I did because they hide my obscene amount of Windex.

Sometimes, when having parties, we use this room as a coat closet. So I had the lovely Trish from Cottage By Design make simple linen panels to keep the machines out of sight. The antique French coat rack and an enamel sign with our favorite number 15 are both from the Rose Bowl. The old velvet hangers were purchased from Little Byrd Vintage. She has a great shop, go see!

Laun8
The Man made the wood counter top and stained it a beautiful warm honey color. Sorry I don't have the name of the stain, we mixed 4 different leftover ones to get this tone. We matched it to my antique Belgian bread board which sounds a little crazy, but I know you understand.
The clear glass jar holds Oxi Clean and the extra large blue/green one is perfect for tree branches. The iron piece below was purchased last year from my friend Pam. She's also a flight attendant and brought it to California for me in her carry on luggage! Where there's a will, there's a way.

I've had this antique box for at least ten years and have always used it for my dryer sheets. Why change a good thing, right? The vintage oyster basket below was a display piece from Anthropologie and I love old blue paint peeking through.

This mirror is another flea market find and looked rather "newish" when I bought it. So I decided to hang it on my back porch (exposed to the elements) for about 9 months and now it looks perfectly aged. And yes, sometimes he thinks I'm nuts. But again, you get me…I just know it.

And I've got a new design crush: Kilim rugs! Finding different ones for all my bare floors has become my latest thrill. This one was scored at an antique store. It was rolled up in a dusty corner and I spotted it like a hawk. It has beautiful earthy tones and no red, which can be hard to find. Lastly, we come to my humble trash can…an old French flower bucket which is just the right size for the room.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the tour of my laundry closet. Small spaces can a challenge to decorate but I'm happy with how our little laundry turned out.
If you'd like to know more…here's a link to my first post, where I address the paint colors, ceiling treatment and such.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Cheers to petite places!

Absolutely ADORE your most fabulous laundry closet, Heather! Perfection for such a small space. I’m starting to crave Kilim rugs myself now…

Beautiful, I love all the antique details! Now I think my laundry room needs a makeover 🙂

  4. Julie@jam-n-jilly

It’s wonderful! I love all the little details (that I will be copying)! My room it a tad bit bigger but I have been working on it for awhile! I need to get it done! Thanks for the inspiration!

Your laundry closet looks fabulous, I love all the additions that you’ve added to make it your own especially the box you use for the dryer sheets :o)
I’m ashamed of my ‘room of doom’ as we call the laundry, everything that has no other place is dumped in there and at times I really despair…I really need another good sort out and get it looking smart.

  6. Julie@jam-n-jilly

I almost forgot! Do you mind sharing with me what your hubby used for the counter top and where he got it! That is one of my wishlist items for my room just haven’t gotten to it yet! I would really appreciate it! Julie @ jamnjilly@bellsouth.net

your laundry room/closet looks really great!
I have one about the same size but you have a window
and that brings light and a cheery feeling to it.
This past week I took out the darn awful wire shelf
and replaced it with three wood shelves and it’s oh
    so much better….
    The mirror made it!

I’m in the middle of just such a project! Great to see the finished product! I have a great find for Kilim (or any other oriental style) rugs. Have you visited heritageunlimitd.com? I’m not associated with it at all 😉 but my mom and I have filled our houses with it!

  13. colleen

Well that is inspiring to all that say they have no room!
I Love your coat rack & those hangers..hmmm!
I have hung picture Frames & mirrors outside to “age” them too!
Just the best idea hiding anti static in the box!..I will have to find one big enough for my anti static balls!

  14. Jenn

I am always amazed at how you make the mundane look so beautiful. Fabulous job Heather & thanks for sharing…P.S. I totally getcha!

  15. Tricia Rose

All lovely – and that is a beautiful kilim. I’m going over to visit Cottage by Design!
I found my galvanized bin on the freeway – doubled back to get it.

  16. nancy

That’s about the size of ours but we have shelves behind the W&D. How do you reach that window to open it? I wish we had the pedestals on ours now. Someday I want to put french doors with lace panels behind the glass to hide our. For now, it’s a regular solid door.

  17. nancy

Thanks for sharing your lovely laundry room! As I trudge down to our nasty basement to do our laundry I will think I your light and airy room. I LOVE your idea for storing dryer sheets…I have the exact same box handed down from my grandma…it actually started a small collection of similar boxes. Your ideas and pictures are always an inspiration! ♥♥

  18. Lorrie

I love your laundry room, especially the light fixture. I definitely need to replace my laundry room light fixture, and would love the same style. Where did you buy your laundry room light fixture? Maybe I can convince my husband to add a wood ceiling too! Great inspiration!!

  19. Debbie

Divine! Thank you for every little detail you shared. I love learning from you! In my opinion, I credit you with being the “American (Decorating) Idol” of all time!

  20. sherri lynn

wow this is the most beautiful laundry space i’ve ever seen! i love your box for your bounce sheets – i never would have thought of doing something like that!

  21. Hannah

L.O.V.E. i would totally get excited about doing laundry if my laundry closet looked like that! great job!!!!!! 🙂

  22. Karen DeCapite

It turned out great! Small can be beautiful! Love the bounce box idea! And of course all your little antique treasures and fabulous finds look wonderful! Great job!
    HAGD! Karen

  23. Theresa

You did a wonderful job with such a small area to work. I love it. I wish I had a laundry closet but my washer and dryer are in the garage.

  24. Linda Rubin

Heather…..it is awesome and sooooooo functional. Way to go.
    Linda

  25. trish

    Heather,
You rock! You are too kind to give me a mention…I’m getting a little teary… The laundry room looks a-MAZ-ing. Just what I needed to see to get me motivated for my next project. Deck demo starting tomorrow!

  26. Karen B

It’s beautiful Heather! Do you buy your F&B paints online or go into LA, Santa Monica or Laguna Niguel? Seems like it would be best to see them in person.

  27. trish

Crazy how the blogging world works! I was just at your blog a few days ago after seeing you on Heather’s. LOVE working with linen! You are crazy talented!

  28. Heather Bullard

    Hi Nancy,
Well, we’ve lived here for 9 years and I have actually never opened that window. Not even once.
I guess if there’s a fire and I need to use it I’ll have to grab a step stool. 😉
    Smiles,
    H
PS. Love the idea of doors to hide the machines. Very clever!

  29. Heather Bullard

    Hi Karen,
Laguna Niguel is the closest for me. But if I’m in the LA area I go to Cox Paint in Santa Monica. All the F&B colors are so lovely!
    Best,
    H

  30. Holly

Love it! We don’t have a “room” just a nook in kitchen (blech) and I’m hoping for a stacking washer and dryer eventually but I love what you did too! my washer and dryer are older and don’t have flat tops though so the shelf would have to higher, and I don’t know where we’d put our file cabinet…. lol … but I LOVE yours so thanks for the inspiration… truly this one thing I HATE in this house!

  31. cindy

beautiful, really beautiful BUT…. where does one put the dirty clothes in such a gorgeous laundry room?????

  32. Heather Bullard

Ha, ha! Why in the washing machine, of course. One great thing about a small room is that there’s no clutter build up! There’s just no room to pile things high or use it as a drop off station for odds and ends. 😉
    Smiles,
    H

  33. Kimberly

H~ I love the idea of putting the dryer sheets in a cute box. Mine are in a basket but a box is way cuter! Now to find my box I have stored somewhere. 🙂 Blessings, Kimberly

  34. paige

what a great spot!! i think the little cafe curtains look fabulous. the mirror is my favorite element! cheers for using wonderful pieces for dryer sheets and oxiclean!!
    xo

  35. Busy at Home

You made it look like a laundry room in some French spa or something! Congrats on a good job!
Question: Have you had any problems with the machines vibrating and knocking around things resting on top of the board? I once but a container of bleach on top of my dryer and let’s just say it was not a pretty picture. 🙂 that was my first thought when I saw your lovely branch jar.

  36. Susan

heather it is just beautiful! you really don’t need more than that! you did a fantastic job and all the touches are super! susan

  37. Alice

A lovely laundry room! The light from the window keeps it cheery, and you’ve decorated it beautifully!

  38. kasey

I *wish* i had a laundry closet…but nope…i have a cellar in which my laundry is located.
    Yours is just beeeutiful.

  39. Haylee

I get you and I adore your laundry space! I’m loving the oxi clean in a jar idea. I make my own natural laundry soap and store it in a large jar but it surely needs an oxi clean jar friend now! Your laundry area is creative, classy, and clean! Thanks for sharing!

  40. pamq

    Oh, this is just glorious.
At my apartment building, I have to go outside, down a long boardwalk and a flight of stairs, into a basement laundry room.
    {which is always fun in the snow and/or rain…}
The laundry room is decorated with signs telling us to clean out the lint traps in the dryers and stacks of ancient magazines.
But I guess it beats a scrub board down in the creek!
    😉

  41. Pixie

Oh that’s BEAUTIFUL! I love every bit of it but completely fell head over heels for the fabric softner sheet storage. What a beautiful and creative way to store something so blah.

  42. Lisa Gatz

Heather, I had a box that looked EXACTLY like the one you use for your dryer sheets. I think I took out the main image and painted a poppy scene and painted the carved poppies all sorts of wonderfulness. I gave it to a friend as a gift. I probably wouldn’t paint it now. Or maybe I would…

  43. Ashley @ DesignBuildLove.co

so cute!!! Love the curtain idea! I’ve been wanting to get top-loaders for some time so I can do the table top thing, but I’ve never thought of curtains. LOVE it!!!

  44. teresa

They say great things come in small packages….I love it….the curtain in front of the washer and dryer…fabulous.
    Thanks for sharing.

  45. kelly

Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea! love it!

  46. Susanne

Fantastic! I love the counter and curtains and dryer sheet box and carpet! I’m running out to the garage in a minute to retrieve the old karistan carpet, that I recently moved out of the LR, and laying it in front of my machines. Then maybe I’ll finally be motivated to take that last load out of the dryer. Thanks for the instant mini makeover idea!
    Susanne.

  47. Theresa White

Heather, your laundry room is just gorgeous. Would you please share information on how your husband mounted the wood above the washer and dryer? Also, where did he find the wood and how thick is it? Thanks so much for all of your wonderful inspiration! Theresa theresa.white@cox.net

  48. Amanda

I have the same question as Theresa. Is that counter mounted to the wall or laying on top? How was it done? Thanks!

  49. carladixon.1@insightbb.com

Heather, is the wooden counter over your W&D suspended by wall brackets or is it sitting on top of the W&D. I’m trying to figure out a way of making mine look built-in without actually building a cabinet around it. thanks! Great job.
