Field Trip: Dana Point Nursery

There's nothing like a trip to a nursery to put you in the mood for spring planting. One such fabulous little place is the Dana Point Nursery. Their displays are unbelieveable and the cool ocean climate produces the most amazing plants! Come along and see for yourself…

They've been in business since 1947 so it's fair to say they are experts in their field. I wish my succulents looked as healthy and vibrant as theirs. It's like they're on steroids. They have dozens of hanging succulent gardens that are enormous.

And small gravel paths to meander while you choose your herbs. I love their broken concrete raised beds. Most of the walls have baby tears and moss growing on them. And notice the small concrete trim cap surrounding the top of the wall? I think it's such a great detail that makes them look more polished.

They also have a large selection of terracotta pots in many shapes and sizes. My favorites are the tall narrow pots I use for topiaries and trailing plants.

Indoors you'll find a small koi pond stocked with some very large fish. They must be trained because they follow you as you walk around the pond waiting for food. You can also find lots of shade loving plants and gifts for garden lovers.

Why even the camelias that have fallen on the concrete floor are lovely!

May I suggest if you're stuck in a creativity rut….grab your camera and head to the nearest nursery. It might be better than the usual "grab a book and head to the coffee shop". I myself found it so refreshing and inspiring! Cheers to Spring!

Didn’t know about this nursery! Thanks. I always thought that Roger’s Gardens was the best nursery to visit. Maybe I’ll make a field trip and hit both.

Hi Heather – That nursery is gorgeous, well it also helps that you take such gorgeous photos! But seriously, I have to visit that nursery, since Dana Point is only 45 minutes from me.
Love your new blog look by the way. A blog makeover…beautiful!

Visiting a nursery, greenhouse, or even a lovely garden is probably one of the best stress-relievers you can find. Something about all the freshness and life! Thanks for a lovely post.

Going to the nursery is so fun. It’s a yearly outing for us, although not until Memorial Day here. After a long Winter we really looked forward to it! Lovely photographs! Have a great week! Susan

oh, that makes me long for spring. (which is still a ways away here in the Midwest!) I will be heading to my nursery in about 3 weeks! Thanks for the inspiration 😉

    Love those succulents!
All my Hens and Chicks {plants…not real hens and chicks!!!} died last spring.
    So sad.
But what I want are those fish!!!
    Awesome!

The plants are lovely! Going to a garden center is one of my favorite things to do! I love gardening. I use Moo Poo Tea for my plants and they grow like crazy! Google Haven Brand if you want too. Everyone I know swears by it. I just went to the orchid show at Cleveland Botanical Garden, just wonderful. Well have a good week.

    Hi Karen!
I love Roger’s Gardens too but the Dana Point Nursery is so charming. It’s smaller than RG’s and more old fashioned. You’ll have to visit!
    Best,
    Heather

    Hi Susan,
I’ve never heard of Moo Poo Tea! Wonder if my Chicken Poo is just as good? 😉
    Best,
    Heather

You are so right about this! My last blog post was about the garden show here. I nearly came unglued when I saw what they had created!! Save the bubble bath, I say, and head to the nearest garden nursery for some wonderful mental health treatment!

Your photos were so beautiful I just had to stop in during a camping trip to Doheny Beach! It made me go home and trim some of my succulents so I can start a new pot with a variety of them. What an inspiration!

The laguna beach garden club has linked to this page for several months. Each time I visit I am thrilled with your beautiful photos and super thrilled that the nursery is such a strong supporter of our club. Thank you for the beautiful page.

Nice pictures! I would love to have plants like those. They are spectacular looking plants. I wonder in an aurora nursery would have plants like that?

Thanks for the post, and yes there is nothing better than going to the nursery and making it get you pumped for when spring comes around. Because my girlfriend always goes to the nursery and tries to find something new to add to her collection. And we found this new nursery http://www.thegrowingplace.com that we’re going to have to check out sometime.
