Santa Barbara Chicken Coop

Sbcoop1

On our recent trip to Santa Barbara which I wrote about here and here we came across a beautiful home decor store called Rooms and Gardens with the most charming surprise tucked in the back. It was this tiny cottage garden complete with a small chicken coop and pen. Right in the middle of the city!

It was filled with lots of things I love…cobblestone walkways, pea gravel, used brick, boxwood hedges and white iceberg roses. Mixed in this luscious setting they had a few garden items for sale like this terracotta cloche and wagon. It was sooo charming!

They told us that a family brings their children everyday to take care of the 3 Buff Orpington hens that live in the coop. Can you believe that? EVERYDAY. Wow. The children sell the eggs to help pay for the feed and such. Talk about teaching your children about urban farming.

Here’s a shot of the pen and how it’s attached to the coop. I really want to expand my garden that surrounds our coop. I think it needs to be more cottagey. Yes, more cottagey is the answer.

Just adorable – very cottagey! Heather, I read your blog all the time, and for some reason I never comment. That is bad manners! So today I want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog and your wonderful sense of style.

My chicken feeder I got at The Farm Chick Show will fit right in there.
I bought the bird cage, the small metal and a vintage horse ribbon from you and loved meeting you.
Can’t wait for the next magazine.
    Enjoy!

My oldest daughter has the garden at Country Roads and for years has wanted to have chickens out back! I’m always worried the City will get on us. I may have to share your post with her! Beautiful pictures.
    Take care,

So glad I popped over tonight, Heather!
I love the cottagey look, I can see why this little cottage/coop/yard appealed to you. Almost looks like something out of Beatrix Potter. We’re adding the cottage look to our yard too and the inspiration just grows with each addition. The little picket fence is charming too, maybe I’ll go outside & putter after this by Moon light!

That’s my favorite store on State Street. They didn’t have the chicken coop when I was last there, but it’s bee a while.
I would love to have chickens, but where I live they would attract coyotes.

Who knew chicken coops and raising chickens could be so beautiful and precious. Your coop and this one are so sweet and I only wish I could have chickens. It’s just too hot here, I’d worry myself to death about them.

    Heather,
What a great store! We have one here in Michigan that looks like this–it’s called “Country Pride Village” and my daughter and I could spend hours there.

WOW! amazing to find such a thing in the city! I wish I could sneak one in behind my condo/townhouse…..but I fear that the little dogs next door would give me away….smiles.

we have those chickens and they are the best layers…but our coop is not nearly as adorable as that – with that brick wall…and the little fence…it’s practically perfect looking!!

It is so funny to see this. I have to tell you back in 1987 I worked in this shop before it was Rooms and Gardens. If you would have seen the way it looked before…yuck! It was a weed bed with our trash cans sitting right about where that chicken coop is now. It was really awful. I live in Pennsylvania now but we visit Santa Barbara almost every summer. The first time I went into rooms and gardens when it opened I was so surprised by the beauty of that little cottage garden in the back. We will be there in July and I can’t wait to visit again. Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures! Jenn
