Backyard Chickens
It’s been a while since I’ve updated you with a few chicken photos, so today’s the day.
Hope you enjoy the peep show!
This is Frenchie on the left, she lays chocolate-brown eggs…which is the reason we brought her home with us. She was broody last week, but is thankfully over it. We’re waiting for her to start laying again. I miss her lovely eggs. Next to her is Whitey, so named for her white bottom. She lays pretty blue eggs and is the skittish, shy girl in the group.
That’s Ruby 2. Yes, you’re probably guessing right. She’s just as friendly as the original Ruby. And Coco, (in the first photo of the post), likes to lay her eggs inside the roost instead of the nesting boxes. We think she has body image issues and believes she can’t fit in the boxes.
Poor girl. If she only knew she could.
This is Gray Girl. She’s Whitey’s sister and is a bit more adventurous. Her eggs are larger and also a little more green. Her tail feathers are the most perfect shade of gray!
And now, we’ve reached The End.
If you’re new to the blog, this is where they live.

I remember where they live… in style!
The hens are as lovely as ever. What darlings.
Thank you for a most agreeable *peep!*
Aww, thanks Natalie! It looks like you are the official Chickenblogger? I’m guessing you could probably teach me a thing or two about chickens! ๐
…or I’m just _chicken!_
Oh this post makes me even more excited for our chicks to arrive in two weeks! Eeek! Can’t wait!
I’m excited for you!! Let us know when your girls have arrived!
Best Peep Show!! We’ve talked about getting chickens for years. Maybe one day. Your pictures sure make me want them. Lovely pictures. I love the last one with that luscious clover she is walking in.
Haha, you mean the weeds. ๐ We don’t fertilize or use weed killer in the backyard because of the chickens. But now, I’m going to start thinking of it as “luscious clover” instead of weeds.
As a kid I was deathly afraid of the chickens at my grandmother’s house because they chased me aroung the yard. Plus the chicken house was dark and stinky and I was sure the either the hens would peck my eyes out or a giant black snake would fall down on my head. I never had the desire to have my own chickens until I found your blog way back when. But convincing my husband is a different story–too much work.
Thanks for sharing your delightful chickens with us! They are gorgeous and I love reading about their different personalities. And those eggs–it must be a joy to gather them.
I’m so glad I didn’t have a childhood experience like yours, it may have swayed me in having chickens too. I’ve loved raising hens, they are so quirky and fun…plus they have benefits!
Aww, I love these photos–such pretty little hens! Thank you for letting me live vicariously for a moment through you as our township won’t allow us to keep chickens. ๐ May I ask which rose that is in the photo, is it Abraham Darby?
Yes, it is…my all-time favorite rose!
It’s one of my favorites, too. Thanks for getting back to me!
Heather,
I so wish we could have chickens. The part of Irvine I live in won’t allow them. They look like they would be so fun, not to mention the benefit for “farm” fresh eggs. Thanks for the update. They are a charming group.
Karen
Thanks, Karen! And poo on Irvine. ๐
Ah, the girls, they are so beautiful. I too wish my city would allow chickens. Your clover is so green and pretty.
Hi Heather,
Love the latest pictures of your “girls”! I am about to approach my neighbors asking them to sign a petition to allow me to have a few hens on our less than 2 acre property as our county government recently passed a variance process for chickens. Yay! I am extremely interested in purchasing your plans as they seem to have everything I am looking for, but I was wondering if you could tell me specifically what bedding materials (both inside and in the run) you use and your process and timing for cleaning the coop? Also, what type of feeders and placement have you found works best? Thanks so much!
Britt
Lovely blog!
I was just wondering, what breed is Whitey? She doesnt look like the other ameraucanas Iยดve seen. She is so cute!
