Grove House: Exterior Inspiration
I’ve always loved white houses with black shutters, they appear timeless to me, and never seem to go out of style. For the design of Grove House, this was the exterior I wanted to create. Defining the exact architectural style was a bit more tricky, since I’m drawn to both farmhouse and cape cod style homes. So our architect helped us create a hybrid of the two.
The house will actually be single story, but with dormers that will give the appearance of a second floor. And it will have long extended porches on both the front and back of the house.
We’ve decided on a gray slate tile roof to accent the white cement siding and black shutters. I think it will provide enough contrast and not compete with the other colors.
The studio will have small porches at both entrances. As I mentioned in an earlier post, there will be a Dutch door for the front entrance and French doors at the back, extending out into the gardens. I hope they create a warm welcome for visitors.
The process of designing the home has actually been easier than I thought it would be. I think it’s because I’ve spent years tearing out magazine spreads, bookmarking images (before Pinterest)…learning what really appeals to me and how we want to live in our new place.
Putting the plan into action might be a different story. Fortunately, I’m married to the guy who builds stuff for a living. Love him to pieces and wouldn’t want to do it without him.

Oh, my you are building my dream home. Can’t wait to watch it come to be.
Aww, thanks Kim. So happy you’ll be coming along on our journey.
Thanks for putting these together! I was just considering black shutters for my tiny white house…..can’t wait to see your new home come together!
If you install them, keep me posted! Would love to see.
Wow Heather! I can’t wait to see Grove House all finished up! I love it when homes have names! I love your inspiration photos too.
Thanks, Tristan. I’m so glad I’ve saved so many inspiration pics for just this reason.
I do the same thing! I call them “Inspiration Files” and I’ll post about my inspiration for whatever project. I’ve got inspiration files for chicken coops, kitchen redesigns, house builds, etc. It’s so much fun to look back over my inspiration! Here’s my favorite installation of “Inspiration Files” so far!

Love all the covered porches on the third photo down. I, too, want a one story home with 13 foot ceilings standard next time around with as many porches as possible. I will really enjoy seeing your house under construction.

Oh I love love all of your ideas and I knew I would!!
I live in a 123 year old farmhouse – so I share your love for them immensely:) My husband & I are slowly fixing it up.
I’ve always been more inclined to green shutters on farmhouses, but that is because it is my favorite color. When we first moved in we still had an original slate roof, and I loved it so! Unfortunately, it had just reached its expiration date (of over a 100 years)…which is basically the story of my life, my bad luck would make a Leprechaun cry.
Anyways, we weren’t able to afford (being first time homeowners) to replace it with slate, but we did do an english green tin roof. And I’m happy with it…someday I’d love to slate again.
Rambling here – your ideas will be gorgeous, can’t wait to keep up with the progress!!
Oh, your new home is going to be lovely and I can’t wait to see more! We so enjoyed the whole process of designing and building, and hope to do it again someday. Enjoy every moment!
love each of these homes I have the last two saved in my files as well.
Building is so fun especially when you know exactly what you are
going for. I will be following your progress.
I’m so excited to see your house..when it is done!! I love your style and yes…white wood houses with black trim are timeless. I love both styles as well, Cape Cods and farmhouse..you can check my blog for tons of homes with that style. Can’t wait to try that recipe I love everything raspberry. Hope you had a good Mother’s day with your family. For some reason it is not letting me include my website..home…be inspired. under house stalking. Keep up the inspiring work.
Heather, so beautiful. We both love the white and black farmhouse type homes and I also love the cape cod style too. So much to pick from. I think it all goes back to longing for a simpler time, the classic styles. I am so happy for you and am a fan of your work. I think you should do a book about your home and the process I think that would be spectacular and a wonderful legacy for your family.
Wishing you peace and long slow days to enjoy every second of the gift of building a home.
God bless
Lisa
