DIY: Pretty Posies
Most of us see grocery store flowers on a weekly basis while we're running to pick up the usual milk, butter and eggs. Sometimes the bundles seem a little sterile. Tightly bound and shrink wrapped. It's hard to find them as lovely as a bouquet from a floral shop or even our own backyard gardens.
I thought I'd share a quick way to spruce them up and give them that wow factor for very little money and only a few minutes of prep time.
- Purchase a bundle or two from your local store.
- The two I bought cost $9 for both.
- Gather a few "extra" flowers, branches or vines from your garden.
- Go through your ribbon stash and choose your favorites.
- Think about a variety of colors and textures when choosing.
- Dig up some old jewelry. Pins, brooches, clips or earrings work well.
- If you don't have those on hand, make a cute homemade tag instead.
- A tiny picture frame, antique key or locket would be pretty too.
- Divide the flowers and foliage into several posie bundles.
- Clip all the stems at an angle as evenly as possible.
- A small Ziploc bag will hold water. Secure with a rubber band.
- I love using brown kraft paper to wrap them. It adds an earthy, natural feel.
- You could also use gift wrapping paper or vintage wallpaper.
- Scallop the edges with decorative scissors for a finished look.
- Tie your pretty posie with a beautiful ribbon.
- And finally, add your favorite embellishment or gift tag!
These would make lovely hostess gifts or could be given as bridal shower or party favors. Very simple to do, gentle on our wallets and packed with thoughtfulness. Be sure to let me know if you give it a try and have fun!

What a beautiful hostess gift … I agree. I love the brown kraft paper with a ribbon and including something from your garden as well. Great post.

Fabulous idea! Thank you!
Love this! I’m always drawn to colorful brooches in thrift shops but never buy them because I have no idea what to do with them. I’m buying the next ones that strike my fancy!

Absolutely gorgeous! I sustain myself on grocery store flowers through fall to early spring. I love how you’ve made them look extra special with all the beautiful fine details.
Happy summer to you!

I’d make them and give them to myself! Very pretty.

This idea is just wonderful! Love the scalloped kraft paper and the bits of jewelry embellishment 🙂 Another fun way to give flowers is to put a little bouquet in thrift shop vases (often just $1 each) tied with raffia or ribbon. These make easy hostess gifts because your host doesn’t have to search for a vase. Thanks for sharing Heather!
How is it that you can take such simple things and make them SO extraordinary?! I absolutely love your blog and all of the creative and inexpensive ideas that you have (and how beautifully you show them to all of us!).
I have used quite a few of your ideas – and they truly are easy and quite cost effective (ex: honey butter-check, Christmas wrap ideas-check, frittata-check!)
Luv you and your amazing ideas- Thanks 😀

Two words – GORGE-OUS! Everything you do is so classy, girl.
Very pretty. I just bought some $1.00 earring pairs very similar to this at a flea. Tell me how you made the large scallops…
Beautiful Heather! It makes the flowers seem extraordinary. I love my oversize towels from FC from you. I think EVERYONE should buy one.
Dear Heather,
I tried to email you, but somehow it couldn’t be done… so I’ll write my question here (totally off topic…):
I really do love you style, Heather! Could you please please give some ideas and inspiration for decorating and personalizing the toilet/bath?
Thanks in advance!

Great idea! I always have trouble making my own bouquet to give as a gift and this gave me some great tips! Will do for upcoming holidays! This article was very useful as well http://www.sweetspot.ca/SweetHome/expert_gardening/8758/bouquet_basics/!

That is a beautiful bouquet. I’ve taken bouquets to my friends in jelly jars with paper and pretty ribbon but I love the addition of the pin. Perfect!

Somehow I just found your blog today…how could I have missed this?! Love the flowers idea- I brought flowers to my daughters ballet recital and was cringing over the horrific red cellophane wrapping. ewww… This would have been perfect!
