Ramblings and Such

Hey there friends! How’s everyone been doing? I sort of fell off the blogging bandwagon since my days have been filled with house building stuff, and apparently I’m the Project Manager. Here’s the highlights of what’s been going on around these parts…

  • First off, I’m in love, love, love with this porch swing. And those shutters. I’m thinking both need to be added to Grove House. Everyone agree? Just say yes.
  • My days have been consisting of meetings with electricians, plumbers, foundation guys, and about 1,000 other people who will have their hand in the pie of building the house.
  • Choosing all the lighting is lots of fun…if only I could decide on all the lighting.
  • On that topic…too many opinions aren’t always best. They don’t always agree and I’m finding they have their own “likes” and “imaginary budget”. Which don’t coincide with mine. But I blame this on myself…I asked for their opinions in the first place. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • Did I mention that we’re also building a large studio workspace? I feel like a kid on Christmas morning every time I think about it! I can’t wait to share the details and plans for it.
  • In non-house building news, I was recently interviewed by Cedar Hill Ranch.
  • Our chickens are laying eggs like it’s a competition. We’re getting one-a-day from each of them, which means we’re giving them away to every person we come in contact with.
  • In my little spare time, I’ve been sorting through every drawer, cupboard, closet and nook & cranny to have the most massive yard sale in history. Down sizing the “stuff” is so liberating!

So what have you guys been up to? Is school out for all the kiddos? Any vacations planned?

I agree about the shutters, but would have issue with that style of swing. It does not look
comfortable at all and comfort is all important for a porch swing. I’ve enjoyed mine on my back
covered patio for 20 plus years and spend lots of time there in the summer and fall. Enjoy reading
about what you have been up to. Marie

Yes, we plan on making the back higher and the seat more narrow but still in keeping with the modern design and simplicity of it. Now…I need to find that amazing black rope!

A porch swing was my Mother’s Day gift from my husband in 1986..he built it for me..
When we moved in 2001..I excluded it from the sale and it came with us..to our new porch..I love it and all the memories it holds:)
You will love having this..and ours has weathered beautifully..almost pristine actually all these yrs later in QC no less..
    It’s sheltered on a porch..

    • Heather Bullard

How sweet that your husband made yours. I’m hoping mine will do the same. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would drive across country to come to your yard sale. I’m sure you’d have amazing “stuff”!

Am about to start the going through of everything to put into a Garage sale pile…huge job this is…I might use this someday..I might still fit into this…this was a Gift from… this is waiting to be framed..and so it goes. anyone else going through this?

      • Heather Bullard

It can be hard to purge. I’m trying to keep the memories and not the stuff.
In my profession I end up collecting a ton of props and those need some serious weeding out!
Good luck with your efforts and sale, Camille!

    • Heather Bullard

You’re so cute Megan! I suppose it’s true, one man’s trash is another mans treasure. Which is the reason I love flea marketing!

I hope you live close! Your sale would be awesome. I think the shutters and swing are a little modern………is your new house going to be modern? If so, go for it!

    • Heather Bullard

Our house will be a modern take on a farmhouse/cape cod style home. I’ve been drawn to cleaner lines and simpler spaces the last few years. With this being a home we will live in for years (maybe the rest of them) I wanted a design I wouldn’t grow tired of…one that would seem more timeless.
I’m looking forward to sharing more of the design process/ideas of the direction we’re heading!

I’m so excited to see what you do with the Grove house, I love your style!! I’m not too far away from your town so please let me know when your yard sale is I will be there first in line. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Heather Bullard

Thanks! Not sure when it will be…hopefully soon. The stuff is really starting to pile up!

Now yours is definitely a yard sale I would go out of my way for ๐Ÿ˜‰ ok way out of the way, but still…. ๐Ÿ™‚

When building our home, of all the decisions, it was the lighting that gave us the most difficulty!! And I wish my dear husband would’ve listened to me back then because we are now changing them all out!! Can’t wait to see/hear EVERY last detail of Grove House…..and your sale!! ~Kim

  8. Jeanne

I’m pretty sure remodeling/building decisions would put me and my husband into counseling :0
Here’s to you, Heather, having “fun” doing it!

  9. Ashlee

My parents live in Corona, so if you have a yard sale, I might have to plan a trip out just so I can dig through all your goodies! You would probably have the best yard sale ever!!

  10. Karen

I know you have such a clear sense of style, Heather, but my main advice is to not compromise it. Though, cost always has a way of determining final decisions. When we built our last house, the things that continued to annoy me were the things I should’ve stuck to my gut feelings about. Builders, for the most part, don’t get design. (I’m sure your husband is the exception). ๐Ÿ˜‰ Now I’m in a house that somebody else built and there are several expensive things I wish I could change. You know I’m not far and would love to sift through your props!

    Hi Heather,
Shutters and swing…a definite YES. Can’t you just imagine relaxing in the evening on the swing, beverage in hand and a gentle breeze providing you with the sweet scent of citrus blossom?
How fun for you, possibly exhausting, but fun to be building your home with just the details you’ve always wanted.
I’m so happy you are taking us along for the ride!

I like the swing very much! It looks like it’s meant for sleeping. I love taking naps outdoors. There’s something a little exotic about it. Your modern take on a farmhouse sounds like just my style. I look forward to seeing your progress. I know what you mean about choices … when faced with too many, I shut down and can’t make any decisions. Good thing I have a decisive hubby.

  13. teresa

    Beautiful porch! I think I need a nap ๐Ÿ˜‰
Sounds like your days are filled to over flowing….but sounds like awesome fun stuff!
    Happy Day

  14. Ruthie / Sugar Pie Farmhouse

Hey Heather! I LOVE your fresh take on modern farmhouse style! It’s clean, simple and uncomplicated! So refreshing! I love that you are taking us on your home building journey! Can’t wait to see your floorplan…maybe it will inspire me when I design mine! Keep your ideas coming!
    Hugs and sugar!

Yes, and yes to the swing and shutters! Sounds like things are in full swing for Grove House. Can’t wait ’til we get to see some of your decisions, and the progress that’s being made!

  16. Cynthia

My husband and I are heading into the building process for the second time. We are making a one level house since I have MS and downsizing just a bit. I love the whole process, it is so exciting. You sound like you really have your hands full. That porch swing is just gorgeous and it sounds too me that Grove House would love to have one! It must be a joy getting fresh eggs, I have never had that experience and I imagine, they are good and it is exciting. Enjoy your building and adding a fantastic workspace! I can’t wait to see all the beauty you are creating.

    Cynthia

I love the black rope on the swing too! Way better than chains that rust. If you find them, please share.

  18. Judi

Gosh, you’re just making me breathless! But, it’s so exciting. Love the idea of the swing and the color scheme, but it doesn’t look too comfortable. I know you will be able to come up with another idea that will be just as beautiful but more inviting and cozy. What fun!

  19. Stacey@ A Sort Of Fairytale

sound like quite the undertaking, but you will make it look amazing as you do with all spaces!
i ready your interview at Cedar Hill Ranch and really enjoyed it – yes, you should teach a styling class!!

Loved reading your interview. And thought of you when one of our chickens laid her first egg just last week! We have been SOOOO excited! We’ve had a rough start with chickens. {Lost half our flock to a virus.} But the discovery of the perfect blue-gray-green colored eggs has brightened our spirits!

Wow, what beautiful photographs! I love the porch swing idea ๐Ÿ™‚
