Christmas in NYC
Later, this week, I'm headed to NYC with a few girlfriends to celebrate my birthday and take in the beauty of the city during the holidays. I've been looking forward to it for months. Finally, travel for pleasure! We have a long list of places to visit…unique shops, markets and antique stores…mostly locally owned, brick & mortars to support.
We also have a few reservations at some amazing restaurants!
Have you ever been or do you live in the city?
What are some of your favorite local or "non-touristy" favorites?
The weather forecast is chilly but thankfully, no snow is predicted. Although it's beautiful to look at…it can prove to be burdensome to walk through. And there'll be lots of walking. 😉
I plan on taking loads of photos to post later on the blog, but if you'd like to follow along, I'll be sharing daily images on my Instagram feed.

Have a Happy Birthday and a wonderful time in NYC!!!
If you like to eat, as I do, Cafe Habana is a must! It’s home to the most famous corn on the cob with queso fresco . And oh how I love their fish tacos. Yum! The food is OUTSTANDING, the service is fast (however, the house is always packed, so you might have to wait 45mins to be seated, but well worth it!) the restaurant is completely unpretentious and the neighborhood is fun to walk around in. A terrific, out of the way, fabulous restaurant!
17 Prince Street, New York, NY
Have fun!
Such a gift to spend time with dear friends for your Birthday. I can’t wait to read all about it. Enjoy you time there.
Smiles,
Carol

have a wonderful time!!
Having recently moved here a year ago I am still discovering the Big Apple. So here a few things you might want to consider:
1) self-guided walking tour of Grand Central $10 for the headset and available anytime the station is open – takes about 45 min depending on how quickly you walk (http://www.grandcentralterminal.com/info/audiotour.cfm)
2) MASNYC (Municipal Art Society of New York) have docent-led walking tours of the city https://secure3.convio.net/masnyc/site/Ecommerce?store_id=1221
3) Visiting Chelsea Market? Then I highly recommend strolling The Highline http://www.thehighline.org/
4) Union Square Greenmarket http://www.grownyc.org/unionsquaregreenmarket is a food market not to be missed
5) Eataly http://www.eataly.com/
6) ABC Kitchen reservations recommended for brunch, lunch or dinner (http://www.abckitchennyc.com) afterward check out their eclectic choices of home goods
7) If you enjoy a good cappuccino, I recommend (in no particular order): Culture Coffee (http://www.cultureespresso.com); Joe The Art of Coffee (http://www.joetheartofcoffee.com) & Blue Bottle – recently opened in the basement of Rockefeller Center (http://www.bluebottlecoffee.com)
8) New York Public Library – free tours every Thursday at 2pm or you can join a docent-led one for a fee (http://www.nypl.org/events/tours)
I hope you enjoy your birthday celebration in NYC.
Cheers,
Heather

How amazing, visiting NYC for Christmas! My husband and I just visited for the first time a few weeks ago and I really fell in love with the city. While we were there, we walked our legs off seeing all the touristy sites, but I can’t wait to hear about your trip. One day I hope to go again and visit some non-touristy places!
Lucky girl! Have a great time!!!
Thanks for the suggestions! Sounds delicious!
Great places…some are on the list! But I hadn’t heard of the gelato and pastry shop Ferrara’s. Have a great time as well!
The Culinary Chase….you rock! Thanks so much! The library, the MASNYC, and Grand Central…hadn’t thought of those. I may need another trip! Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!
Thanks Claudia…will do!
I was there last week and love to have Sunday breakfast at Balthazars, which also includes Rachel Ashwell and Sabon (you HAVE to wash your hands in the fountain). Love Fishes Eddy and Union Square market plus Grand Central Holiday market. If you like fleas – try the Antiques Garage Flea. HGTV was shooting Flea Flip when I was there. On the same street (other side of 6th) is an outdoor flea… pretty rough but cheaper. Skip Magnolia Bakery. And of course, Tinsel Trading and M&J Trimmings.
This is my dream vacation. Maybe next year! thanks for sharing. Now I have to go make some candied citrus peel
I’ve never been to New York but now I’ll get the chance to see it through your travels and beautiful photography…I can hardly wait…oh by the way safe travels and HaPpY BiRtHDaY:)
Happy Birthday and what fun to spend with girlfriends in a big city. Have a wonderful time. Will enjoy seeing your pictures on Instagram.
We went last year at this same time…had so much fun. As much as you want to look cute, be sure to pack comfortable shoes. I am sure you know that, but it is such a bummer when your feet start hurting.
A few of my suggestions (in no particular order) would be… Ferrara’s Bakery in Little Italy. And just a few doors down is a wonderful Italian restaurant Da Nico. Purl SOHO for creative types. The Union Square market. ABC Carpet and Home (my fav).
Also, my friend gave me a great book prior to our trip. It is called The Stylist’s Guide to NYC…it was a great resource! I recommend it. Wish you were close, I would loan it to you 😉
Hope you have a great birthday trip!
Happy Birthday! You’ll have a great time. I concur with all the suggestions – they are great. I recommend a trip out to Brooklyn, however! My daughter lives there and has taken me around….
Junk – in Williamsburg – great “stuff”
Pies and Thighs – down low fried chicken, greens, black eyed peas
Bark – the best hot dog; a fun place; very eco..and surrounded by cool funky stores
Brooklyn Flea Market if you’re there on a Sunday
In Manhattan:
And even though it’s cold, I recommend Shake Shack – custard shakes and great burgers – it’s right across from Eataly.
Bistro Laurent Tourondel near Union Square…laid back atmosphere
And I especially concur with Fish’s Eddy…I want to take home the entire store…

Happy Birthday! I am the crazy one from Missouri that gave you
a ride to the airport after the “Farm Chick” Show! Remember ME? Wish
I could do something fun for Christmas like that!! Have a great time! If Serena goes tell her I said HI. Merry Christmas

Happy Birthday Heather and have a great time in NYC! If you like donuts you have to go to the Donut Plant (the creme brulee is awesome). Also check out Fishs Eddy which is near Eataly – you’ll love it! Have fun!

My, those breads look yummy! We’ve never been to Shandaken bakery yet. I love NY and had visited there a few times.
