Making the Cut – Stylist Secrets
With every story produced there are always a few favorite images that don't "make the cut". It isn't because they aren't lovely or beautiful it's usually due to how the story unfolds in the layout and the mix of images on a spread.
This lemon cake is a perfect example. It's looks delicious and has beautiful colors…it just didn't make the cut. And here's a little "stylist secret" for you…it's a store bought cake from WalMart. To make it more appealing, I cut a big piece out, sprinkled a few shavings up front and sliced a fresh lemon for garnish. And there you have it..a "homemade" cake ready for it's closeup!

Now that is a pretty piece of sunshine on this cold winters morn here in Southern Indiana. I will most definitely see if the local Wallyworld has one of these babies!
Thank you for the “tricks of the trade” post. Always exciting to see a new inspiring post from you, Heather! Pure Joy!
Oh my goodness, I just love the “stylist secret”! Please tell us more!

Wonderful staging of the “Walmart” Cake. Beautiful photo
Funny I was hoping to find the recipe for this yummy cake at the bottom of the post. The little extras and sweet background props really make it an amazing photo! I’m not sure I’d make a good stylist, but it sounds like a lot of fun, and I’d love to see more of this type of post.
Congratulations to the winners!
I hope it tasted as good as it looks. Anything lemon makes my mouth water.
who knew Walmart cakes could be so beautiful!
You totally threw me with the Walmart reveal! I would never have guessed!!! You have such an eye for styling, you made me covet a Walmart cake! (But I’m guessing that beautiful blue and white cake stand did NOT hail from the same place!)
Absolutely beautiful colors. Gorgeous photo. I love it! ~ Christie
Pretty. And you have my same silver(plate) – love it!
THAT CAKE LOOKS SCRUMPTIOUS! ALWAYS WONDERED HOW THEY MAKE A PHOTO LOOK SO ENTICING. COULD YOU SHARE SOME MORE STYLIST SECRETS…
How did you cut the slice out, it looks very manicured at the edge of the frosting and the cake?

Hi Len,
To get a clean cut I run the knife under hot water before using it. Then it melts like butter!

Hi Auntie Bliss,
The wire piece under the plate is actually an egg basket that I collapsed and used as a trivet.
Another secret…layers add depth to a photo!

Hi Lori-Anne,
You guessed right on the plate. It was an antique flow blue piece from the homeowner. She had great pieces to choose from on that shoot!

Heather~ from the simple to the sublime. Don’t you love what a transformation a few embellishments can create.
I discovered Flea Market Style at my local Boarders… 5 mins from my house. I’m looking forward to your next publication.

NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS WOULD I HAVE GUESSED IT WAS STORE BOUGHT! THANKS FOR SHARING THAT LITTLE SECRET.
I’m never in Wal-Mart long enough to look at the cakes!
On some of the trips, I don’t even make it through my shopping list before I have to bolt and run.
Just a bit much of a crowd in there for me!
But who knows….
Maybe next visit, I’ll have to scope out the bakery department……….
It’s all in the presentation {smiling} And, I sure wouldn’t mind a slice right now. First time reader of your blog. Beautiful, I’ll be back.
2 WOWs.
WOW #1 is that it didnt make the cut.
WOW #2 is that store bought never looked so good. I think I ran across your blog some time ago, but I am so glad to have found it again. I will be adding it to my must reads list and my blog roll. Thanks so much for providing amazing content for us to read and be inspired by.

I love it! I do the same thing! When going somewhere and I realize I didn’t find the time to bake the cake or cookies I was supposed to; I buy some goodies, bring them home put them one of my plates, add some sugar/icing/flowers/other decorative do-dads and … voila!
Just love it!
